THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY
(First Published in A FESTIVE FEAST)
Rachel Logan had always thought of herself as a career woman. She was successful, the only female in the pharmaceutical company she worked for to head a department. She aced any exam – she’d obtained a first in Chemistry from Oxford University after all. She viewed her body as her temple. A temple she had ignored in the past, but was now well looked after. She exercised, ate healthy, refrained from too much alcohol and no longer indulged on drugs. The occasional lapse did happen. She blamed her Spanish roots; red wine was supposed to have medicinal properties. With her waist length, straight, practically black hair, long tanned legs and perfect curves she knew she was attractive. She got hit on at least once a day.
All of this meant nothing.
Rachel had agreed to lose her maiden name. Logan would bite the dust and she would become Mrs Hatchet. She was engaged to be married.
Just saying the word married in a certain way made it sound like poison. She could not believe she was going to commit to a monogamous life with one man. She had certainly had her fun over the years. A part of her would miss the variety. She gave a sly smile as she remembered some of her more colourful conquests.
Her jitters were stupid. She was going to marry a wonderful man; a man she happened to be head over heels in love with. If one conquest stood out from the others it was the one where a man actually managed to sweep her off her feet for a change. That was her Richard, the man she had decided to marry.
Richard was not like other men. He had an intangible quality, a finesse or confidence other men lacked. She had fallen for it hook, line and sinker. The fact he also knew how to please her was a definite bonus. He knew how to dominate her just as much as she could dominate him. It was a partnership, one that was soon to become a binding and legal commitment.
The reason for nerves was valid.
Today was her engagement party. Today was also Christmas Eve, a date chosen by her future mother in law. That sadistic and vile woman had twisted her only son around her little finger and convinced him this date was the right date. Why Rachel had not stood her ground and said no was beyond her. The decision was made, the invitations had been sent. There was no going back.
There was no denying that for the first time in her thirty two years of existence Rachel wanted to run away and hide. That hateful woman would make her day a misery, it was lucky the future in-laws lived in Winchester. It was far enough from their pad in central London to make regular visits inconvenient.
A very nice, and very expensive, hotel had been booked for the event. Again, it was lucky the in-laws were footing the bill. It was the main reason she had agreed.
